There are so many reason system goes to single user mode upon reboot. One the the main reason is the wrong entry to /etc/fatab.
If you try to append s on splash menu on kernel edit and when you boot, system still goes to single user mode with asking for password, then you may want to append the following entry on kernel line and try to see if that works.
init=/bin/sh
instead of s.
when you on shell, fix your typo and reboot.
If this does not fix the issue, boot off the cd.
